tmp75a8-10Replacing the steering shaft assembly

The steps described below are also performed when the ignition switch needs to be replaced (ignition switch).

■ Unscrew 8 screws and remove the top and bottom covers of the stalk switch

■ Remove the lock cylinder, by pushing the locking spring into ignition position II. Pull out the wiring harness to the ignition switch.

■ With the catches released, remove the left and right levers with the signal and wiper switches from the combi switch housing..

■ Disconnect ignition plug connector.

■ Position the steering wheel as if you were driving straight ahead.

■ On the engine compartment side, unscrew the clamp screw on the steering shaft. Leave the clamp at the clutch, from which remove the steering shaft

■ Remove the bolts securing the shaft tube to the front body wall.

■ Unscrew the shaft tube bracket below the instrument panel. To do this, mark the broken head of the special screw

and drill a hole in it. Insert a broken bolt extractor into the hole and remove the bolt.

■ Pull the entire steering shaft assembly out of the coupling flange and carefully set aside

A plastic spacer is placed loosely on the shaft for shaft alignment only. Before assembling the unit, it must be inserted into the shaft tube, then pull it out.

The two steering wheel spokes must face downwards symmetrically during assembly, and the clamp bolt on the steering shaft take the upper horizontal position.

The steering shaft assembly must be installed stress-free. Therefore, carefully guide the steering shaft into the coupling flange, until the contact of the pipe holder. Then screw the pipe bracket loosely to the dashboard, the tube holder to the front wall of the body and the clamp bolt on the shaft.

Install a special screw on the left side of the bracket, until her head is broken, on the right side, screw in a new self-locking nut with a flat washer and a spring. Tighten the pipe clamp bolt. Pull the steering shaft up, until it rests on the ball bearing and tighten the clamp on the shaft, while maintaining the recommended torque.

Press the previously inserted plastic washer out of the pipe. Carry out the remaining assembly steps. Finally, check the center position of the steering gear
