Replacing the camshaft and bearings
The engine must be removed from the vehicle to remove the camshaft. In addition, at least the following parts must be removed: head, ignition distributor, fuel pump, the timing cover, sprockets with chain and tensioner Remove the tappets, remove the two camshaft retaining plate bolts and remove the plate. Pull the camshaft forward, taking care not to damage the bearing bushes. The sleeves to be replaced are knocked out with a suitable mandrel.
The dimensions and fits of the camshaft and bearing bushes are given in the tables. Bearing journals are measured with a micrometer, and the sleeves are mounted with a bore. The bearing pins and cams must not show any scratch marks. Otherwise the camshaft must be replaced. Minor deviations in shape can be removed with a whetstone. Check the condition of the ignition distributor drive toothing and replace the shaft in the event of single or severe wear. When pressing in new bearing bushes, the holes in them must align with the oil channels, made in the crankcase. New bushings are only pre-turned and must be reamed to the correct size, corresponding to the diameter of the spigot. Having a press and a drilling device, worn bearing bushes can be regenerated. After drilling, remove all chips and blow out the oil channels with compressed air. Install the camshaft and assemble the engine in the reverse order to disassembly.
