Replacing the brake shoes
■ Remove the brake drum.
■ Disconnect the upper draw spring. Use special tongs
or as a substitute for pipe pliers.
■ Using a screwdriver, remove the pull spring hook from the hole in the brake shoe.
■ Remove the lever for adjusting the play from the jaw and unhook the retraction spring.
■ Move the jaw slightly outwards and remove the spreader.
■ Press in the plate of the front guide and turn it 90 °, holding the guide on the other side.
■ Remove the plate and spring, pull out the guide.
■ Disconnect the lower draw spring.
■ Unhook the emergency brake cable from the lever.
■ First remove the front brake shoe, then the back.
For replacement, brake shoes of the same quality must be used. Clean the brake drum and brake disc.
A brake cylinder with wet stains needs to be replaced.
■ Coat the six protruding areas of the disc brake rotor with Plastilube prior to installation.
■ Check that the toothed wheel and the expander lever are easy to move. clean if necessary.
■ Apply a thin layer of silicone grease to the threaded expander rod.
■ Screw in the toothed wheel in the spreader as far as the stop.
■ The threaded rod of the left wheel is marked with the letter "L” and on the right the letter "R.” Toothed wheel with spreader, the slack adjustment lever and the pull spring latch for the left side are black, while those intended for the right side are, to distinguish, silver.
■ Attach the emergency brake cable to the lever.
■ Spring-connect the lower jaw ends.
■ Attach the shoes to the disc brake rotor. To do this, insert the guides from the rear, put the springs on and press them together with the plates. Turn the plates by 90 ° , holding the guides from behind.
■ Place the spreader between the jaws. For new jaws, install the disc spring on the slack adjustment lever.
■ When replacing the jaws, parts of the spreader should be replaced, serving as a thermal compensator.
■ Mount the slack adjustment lever with the spring on the spring pin. Attach the spring to the opening in the jaw
■ Insert one end of the pull spring tab into expansion pin, and press the other end into the opening in the jaw.
■ Connect the upper retraction spring to the jaw and to the hitch.
■ Screw in the spreader completely.
■ Install the brake drum and secure the retaining screw
After mounting the wheel and lowering the car, adjust the rear wheel brakes, as described below.
Adjustment of the setting of the rear wheel brake shoes is required after each repair involving the removal of rear brakes. Keep your foot on the brake pedal, until the jaw play adjustment lever jumps from the rear wheels. You need the help of a second person to do this.
