The steering system consists of a steering mechanism with rack and pinion gears and length-adjustable steering rods. The steering gear cannot be adjusted, which is attached to the front wall of the body.
The steering rods are connected to the steering knuckles via maintenance-free ball joints, permanently filled with grease.
■ Remove the air filter housing.
■ Remove the headlight washer reservoir (if present).
■ Remove the ground cable from the shock absorber, as further work will be done in the vicinity of the alternator.
■ Disconnect the steering linkages from the transmission. To do this, first unscrew the middle one (little) bolt securing securing washers Next, unscrew both bolts securing the rods and remove the expanding clamp, lock washers, spacer plate, poles and round washers.
■ If the gearbox has an existing vibration damper, unscrew the muffler clamp from the gearbox housing, then remove the muffler
■ Set the steering gear to the center position. Loosen the screws of both clamps on the steering shaft and the flexible coupling. Push the clutch up along the steering shaft
■ Unscrew two nuts from each gear clamp and remove them with washers..
The steering gear is assembled in the reverse order. The gear teeth must be in the middle position (as for driving straight ahead), Similarly, the steering wheel must be in a centered position Use new self-locking nuts and new expander clamps Finally, check the center position of the steering gear once more
