Timing cover replacement
This operation can be performed with the engine left in the vehicle as follows.
■ Loosen the alternator mounting and remove the V-belt.
■ Remove the bolt securing the pulley to the crankshaft and remove the pulley.
■ Remove the timing cover mounting bolts and remove the cover.
■ Remove the plug seal or remove any residue from the mating surface.
Use a new plug gasket when installing the cover, which sticks to the lid with grease. Check the condition of the sealing ring located on the cover. The ring can be smeared with a little molybdenum disulphide paste. Insert the pulley into the cover hole and slide the whole onto the crankshaft. Tighten the cover bolts provisionally and remove the pulley again. Tighten the cover bolts diagonally. Slide in the pulley and tighten the mounting bolt with torque 40 Nm. Refit the V-belt and tension it.
If it is necessary to replace a damaged O-ring in the timing cover, it is necessary to put the removed cover on the base with its outside side, so that the ring is not supported. Hitting the ring from the center diagonally, slide it out of the socket.
The new sealing ring must be soaked in engine oil before installation 24 hours. The ring is pressed into the cover from the outside, until flush with the outer edge. The pressing process under the press should be stopped in time, so that the depth of the ring can be checked, which should be 9 Mm. Before assembly, it is recommended to position the ring in this way, that the projections on it and on the lid are mutually misaligned. This will ensure that the ring is firmly seated in the seat. Finally, install the timing cover
