EXHAUST – Fiat Uno
The task of the exhaust system is to collect the gases flowing from the manifold, cooling them and draining them through the muffler to the rear of the car. It is important to, that the system is airtight and does not cause heating of nearby parts of the car. The latter possibility exists especially with a cracked or leaky exhaust system. Therefore, you should look for the reasons for increasing the volume of the system and remove them immediately. To check the exhaust system, drive the vehicle onto a pit or lift and check all connections. Tighten the mounting nuts and suspension elements, paying attention to their correct positioning. If cracks are found, holes or corroded spots, then tap these points carefully with a screwdriver, to determine the extent of the damage. Minor losses can be repaired by oxy-acetylene welding. Never weld near fuel lines or flammable components. Small holes can be sealed with special tape. The damaged place is wrapped with a damp tape and secured with a wire. Shortly thereafter, you have to drive a car for a few kilometers, for the tape to cure. The wire can then be removed.
Before unscrewing rusty screws, it is recommended to spray with penetrating agent and wait a few minutes. If system components do not come apart, the connection points must be heated with a burner or a blowtorch. Before screwing them back in, it is recommended to coat the bolts with graphite paste, so that they do not rust and can be unscrewed later.
