Checking and replacing the friction linings – Opel Kadett

Checking and replacing the friction linings

The thickness of the friction linings in all brake shoes is checked. The linings must be of this thickness, so that no rivet is flush with their surface

If excessive wear is found on even only one friction lining, these must be replaced on both sides of the rear axle. The need for replacement also applies to linings with deep grooves, uneven wear or oily.

The new linings to be replaced should be from the same manufacturer.
Remove the brake shoes as previously described.
Remove old linings, by opening the rivets in the jaws.
Two cladding thicknesses are available:
- thick cladding 5 Mm, which can be installed immediately,
cladding thick 5,6 Mm, which, after riveting, require grinding to the final size on a cladding grinder, so that the radius of curvature is smaller by 0,2.. 0,5 mm from the measured radius of the brake drum.
Clean the surface of the jaws. No glue should be applied between the jaws and the linings. Place a new lining over the jaw and insert the rivets into the holes. Start riveting from the center and alternately continue to the outside.
