Service and replacement of the fuel filter (engine 1,6 D)
As part of the recommended periodic inspections, remove water from the fuel filter or replace the filtering system.
To remove water from the filter housing, perform the following steps.
■ Place a container for water under the filter.
■ Unscrew one turn, loosen the vent screw located in the cover and the drain plug located in the bottom of the housing.
■ Drain approx 100 cm3 of liquid.
■ Close the bleed screw and drain plug.
To replace the filter element, use the oil filter wrench. There is a filter element as a spare part of the fuel filter, gasket and retaining ring, made of plastic. The gasket must fit into the filter groove and be secured with a retaining ring. If a filter cartridge is inserted without a gasket, this may damage the engine. The next steps for installing a new filter cartridge are as follows.
■ Moisten the outer rubber sealing ring of the new cartridge with diesel fuel.
■ Screw in filter and hand tighten.
■ Start the engine and increase the speed several times. When idling, fuel should flow through the transparent hoses free from air bubbles.
■ Check the fuel system for leaks.
Proceed as follows to replace the complete fuel filter.
■ Clamp the fuel lines.
■ Remove the hollow bolts, attaching the hoses to the filter; remove the wires.
■ Remove the filter mounting bolts and remove the filter from the wheel arch.
■ The fuel lines must be fitted with new gaskets during installation. Two copper gaskets are required for each mounting bolt.
