For unknown reasons, the term "sports car" stuck to coupes or convertibles. However, when it's good to look, you can have a family, four-door car with a trunk, who without shame can stand at the start of serious competitions When we make a decision, we can make a monster out of it, which will swallow all the known cars, called "sports".
The flagship of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo – This Japanese manufacturer has been associated with serious for years, a rally motorsport. Mitsubishi ambition, since the beginning of the nineties, is to make rally technology available to customers of this company's showrooms. This is why the first Lancer Evo was created – rally car material, in the skin of a family sedan. However, it took a great enthusiast, to drive a serial car on a daily basis, but complicated, manufactured to order only and without warranty. With the eighth evolution, in year 2003, that show of sports technology dressed in the leather of a taxi, has become the company's flagship model.
The Lancer Evo VIII is fast, it is obvious. Turbocharged engines with power 265 KM does its job, a drive 4 wheels allows you to take advantage of even a slight grip. But the special feature of this car is its ability to turn. Recent evolutions have two active differentials – central and rear – and the front with a blockade. It senses this system, when the driver starts to take a corner and helps him to "enter" into it when braking, at the top of the bend and at its exit. The goal is not to save you from skidding (as the well-known ESP makes), but take the corner as quickly as possible, preferably with the gas pressed all the way in. The system offers various operating modes to choose from: on grippy asphalt, loose gravel, or slippery snow. It is enough to have a bit of a knowledge of sports riding and a bit of courage, and in EVO VIII, we become the corner king. Interestingly, a novice driver will not notice anything special – lo, such a very fast car, with a bit hard suspension. And that others go slower? Maybe they have weak tires?
Can more? Oh you can, you can… Lancers Evo in recent years have been the basic material for rally cars of the N group, i.e. "production". They do not differ much from the serial copy, which we tested. But the possibilities of this design go much further.
The fastest Lancer in Poland was Mariusz Stec's Evo VI, automobile, which brought this young competitor to the title of Polish Champion in mountain racing. Parts of the Japanese company HKS were used for its tuning: great turbocharger, forged pistons, modified timing system, special electronics, etc.. In a master car, serial parts can be counted on the fingers: some body parts and mechanisms bodies. The driveline and brakes are essentially from a Group A Lancer, that is, they do not have much to do with serial ones. Maximum power? This is a great mystery – it should
be around 500 MILES, on the top stage of the engine management computer. But Mariusz did not use the strongest regulations yet. Maximum speed? Above 250 km/h, but it depends on the gear ratios, and there aren't any long straights at competitions anyway.
You will ask, how much does such a monster cost? Don't say that to Mrs. Stec, but if you count the cost of a serial car, non-series parts and long hours of preparation, half a million zlotys would be collected. All for this, to ride several dozen kilometers in the season and collect a large cup and a sash.
