The band brake mechanism consists of the following parts: a brake drum with an outer working surface, mounted on the gearbox main shaft and rotating with it while driving; a steel belt around the drum, which from the inside (from the drum side) it is lined with friction lining; clamping lever connected by a rod with the handbrake lever. The steel band with friction lining is shaped and fixed in this way, that there is sufficient play between the belt linings and the brake drum with the brake disengaged, uniform around the entire circumference of the brake drum. Pulling the handbrake lever with the pull rods pulls the upper arm of the clamping lever, as a result, the tape tightens against the drum, causing braking. Because the handbrake (auxiliary) is usually a parking brake, it is most often used to brake a vehicle when stationary.
