Backlash in the steering system. Excessive play in the steering system results in a large play in the steering wheel (a little play in the wheel is needed, because it makes steering easier). Excessive play measured in the steering wheel can be caused by wear or improper adjustment of the steering gear, the steering linkage, wear of steering knuckles or play in wheel bearings. Steering play can be checked by lifting the front of the car, grasping both front wheels simultaneously with both hands, and then slide both wheels outwards and compress them inwards at the same time. A perceptible play will indicate wear or improper adjustment of individual parts of the steering system. Worn steering knuckle parts and loose wheel bearings can also be found by lifting the front of the car and grasping each wheel at the top and bottom repeatedly., so that you can feel the side play.
